NEW YORK, July 9 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox right-hander Pedro Martinez said he turned down an invitation to the All-Star Game because it came too late.
He was asked to fill the spot of Oakland's Tim Hudson, who will not play because of a strained abdominal muscle, mlb.com reported Friday.

"They told me today (Thursday); it was just too late," Martinez said. "I would have loved to do it, but I had already made plans. I would have loved to go."
Martinez indicated Tuesday that he plans to spend the All-Star break resting at home in his native Dominican Republic.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 9-3 with a 3.67 ERA.
Hudson's replacement will be Javier Vazquez of the New York Yankees.
