Morgan leads Senior major

DEARBORN, Mich., July 8 (UPI) -- Gil Morgan jumped to a three-stroke lead Thursday in the opening round of the Ford Senior Players Championship.

Morgan fired a 7-under-par 65 at the TPC of Michigan with Dana Quigley and Bruce Fleisher among those at 68 in this major event on the Champions Tour.

Morgan is seeking his fourth major as a senior player, but his first since the 1998 Tradition.

He leads the elder circuit in earnings this season with more than $1 million.

Playing in his record 250th consecutive event, Quigley grabbed a share of second place with Fleisher, 2001 champion Allen Doyle, Mark James of England, Jose Maria Canizares of Spain and Isao Aoki of Japan.

Hale Irwin, the winningest player in Champions Tour history, led a pack of nine players four strokes off the pace.
