Chicago White Sox sign Garcia

CHICAGO, July 6 (UPI) -- Right-handed pitcher Freddie Garcia has signed three-year, $27 million contract extension with the Chicago White Sox that will keep him on the South Side.

Garcia, 28, was acquired by the White Sox from the Seattle Mariners June 27 with catcher Ben Davis for cash, catcher Miguel Olivo and two minor league players.

Garcia (5-7), a two-time All-Star pitcher, won his first outing for the Sox on June 30 beating the Minnesota Twins. He was scheduled to start Tuesday night's rain-delayed home game against the Anaheim Angels at U.S. Cellular Field. The 6-4, 240-pound Garcia has a 3.35 ERA with 91 strikeout in 16 combined starts.

"When we acquired Freddy, our short-term goal was for him to help us reach the playoffs and beyond," said Ken Williams, Sox general manager. "But in planning for the future, we also felt he was a necessary ingredient to help sustain the long-term success of the organization."
