DENVER, July 5 (UPI) -- Alberto Delgado scored his first MLS goal in the second half as the Rapids blanked the New England Revolution, 1-0, for their eighth win in nine July 4 matches.
Playing his second MLS match, Delgado put in a rebound after Chris Henderson sent a header off the crossbar in the 74th minute.
The Revs switched to a 4-4-2 alignment and kept Colorado at bay for long stretches. They had the better scoring chances in the first half, but Joe Cannon kept the match deadlocked.
In the 12th minute, Pat Noonan got a perfectly weighted ball from midfielder Richie Baker, but Cannon knocked down the left-footed strike and scrambled to cover the rebound.
New England threatened again in the 29th minute, but Cannon stretched to deny a shot by Clint Dempsey after the rookie made a long solo run. Nine minutes later, the former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year sent a point-blank header by Noonan over the crossbar.
