Raptors hire Pete Babcock

TORONTO, July 1 (UPI) -- The Toronto Raptors Wednesday named Pete Babcock, the brother of new General Manager Rob Babcock, as their director of player personnel.

Pete Babcock has spent 30 years in the NBA as a scout, assistant coach, director of personnel, general manager and team president. He is best known for his success as general manager of the Denver Nuggets before taking over the same position with the Atlanta Hawks through the 1990s.

While he was in Denver, the Nuggets made the playoffs six straight seasons, won two Midwest Division titles and reached the Western Conference finals in 1985.

He joined Atlanta in 1990 and helped take the franchise to a Central Division championship in 1993-94 with the best record in the Eastern Conference at 57-25. From 1990-99, his teams had an overall record of 406-300 and made the post-season eight times.

Rob Babcock was named general manager of the Raptors on June 7 after serving 12 years in the front office of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
