Lakers woo Duke coach

DURHAM, N.C., July 1 (UPI) -- Duke Athletic Director Joe Alleva confirmed Thursday that Mike Krzyzewski had talked to the Los Angeles Lakers concerning their coaching vacancy.

Krzyzewski has been the Blue Devils' basketball coach for the past 24 seasons. The Lakers are searching for a coach after the departure of Phil Jackson, who guided Los Angeles to three straight NBA titles and an appearance in the finals this season.

"Consistent with our special relationship, (coach) has informed us that the Los Angeles Lakers have contacted him and entered into serious discussions to fill their vacant head coaching position," Alleva said.

Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils to national titles in 1991, 1992 and 2001. He has reached the Final Four 10 times, won eight ACC Tournament championships and 10 ACC regular season titles. He has compiled a 694-240 record in 29 seasons and a 621-179 record in 24 years at Duke.

Included in those totals are 64 NCAA Tournament victories, the second most in NCAA history.
