Jay Gibbons back on disabled list

KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 30 (UPI) -- Baltimore right-fielder Jay Gibbons was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a hip injury.

It is the second stint on the DL this season for Gibbons, who was out May 25-June 14 because of back spasms.

Before the first injury, Gibbons, 26, was batting .250. Since returning, he hit just .133 in 14 games. He was the Orioles' designated hitter the last three games before going back to the injured list.

To fill his roster spot, the Orioles purchased the contract of outfielder Chad Mottola from Triple-A Ottawa of the International League.

Mottola was hitting .270 with seven homers and 29 RBI for the Lynx.
