MIAMI, June 23 (UPI) -- New York Yankee pitcher Jose Contreras has been reunited with his wife and two daughters after they arrived in Florida from Cuba.
Miriam Murillo Flores, 31, and their two girls, Nailan and Nailenis Contreras, 11 and 3, arrived in the Florida Keys aboard an alleged smuggler's boat, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.
They were taken into custody Monday and released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Miami Tuesday night.
Jose Contreras flew to Miami from Baltimore where the Yankees were playing Tuesday.
"It's a tremendous joy," he said.
"It's a dream I never thought would come true," said Murrillo Flores.
Her sister, brother-in-law and five family friends, including two other children, also arrived on the go-fast boat.
There were 21 refugees aboard the boat and two suspected smugglers. The smugglers were arrested.
They had reached shore after eluding a Coast Guard cutter, which was trying to intercept them before they reached shore. If the refugees had been intercepted, they would have been returned to Cuba.
