POTOMAC, Md., June 23 (UPI) -- South African Rory Sabbatini defends his title in this week's Booz Allen Classic in Maryland.
Many of the top players are bypassing the event, which has a first prize of $864,000.
The tournament begins Thursday at the par-71, 7,005-yard TPC at Avenel.
Sabbatini won last year by four strokes over Fred Funk, Joe Durant and Duffy Waldorf. The South African has four top-10 finishes this year and is 24th on the money list.
The field includes Adam Scott, who is 10th on the money list, and John Daly, 15th. Funk, who finished sixth at the U.S. Open, Durant and Waldorf are all back.
U.S. Open champion Refief Goosen, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh are among the top stars skipping the tournament.
PGA veteran Jay Haas's son, Bill, the Wake Forest star who was named college player of the year, will make his pro debut in the tournament on a sponsor's exemption. His father is not entered.
