MLB: Boston 9, Minnesota 2

BOSTON, June 22 (UPI) -- Curt Schilling pitched seven innings and Nomar Garciaparra's first homer of the season was a grand slam as Boston cruised to a 9-2 win over Minnesota.

After struggling in his last start at Colorado, Schilling underwent an MRI on his bruised right ankle. The results came back normal, allowing Schilling to make his scheduled start in this one.

Schilling (9-4) limited the Twins to one run and four hits.

Garciaparra entered the contest batting .265 with three RBI in nine games since returning from a sore right Achilles tendon that forced him to miss the first 57 contests this season.

Garciaparra broke open the game with one out in the seventh, giving the Red Sox an 8-1 bulge with his fifth career grand slam.

David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez added solo homers for Boston. Ortiz also drove in run with a double and moved back into the American League lead with 65 RBI.
