CARSON, Calif., June 19 (UPI) -- Mexico's Marco Antonio Barrera knocked out Paulie Ayala in the 10th round of a pivotal featherweight fight in California Saturday night.

Barerra, who had most of the Los Angeles-area crowd behind him, controlled the fight before dropping with a body shot followed by a right to the head.

The win came in Barerra's first fight since he lost to Manny Pacquiao last November.

In a preliminary middleweight matchup, Jermain Taylor (21-0) remained undefeated when former junior middleweight champ Raul Marquez's corner threw in the towel after nine rounds. Immediately after the fight Marquez (35-3) told reporters he plans to retire.

Taylor dominated the fight and now has a clear shot at either highly regarded William Joppy or WBC Middleweight champ Bernard Hopkins.
