Bail granted for deported soccer fans

LONDON, June 18 (UPI) -- English soccer fans, deported from Portugal for allegedly rioting in the resort of Algarve, have arrived in London and granted bail.

The Daily Telegraph reported Friday that seven of the fans received suspended jail sentences and three were cleared of criminal wrongdoing.

The fans were given bail if they surrendered their passports and did not leave Britain before a court appearance on July 28.

John Jackson, who works for the energy company nPower, said he was not involved in the clashes but he was spat on, beaten and urinated on by Portuguese police officers.

"It's a disgrace, I was not anywhere near the riot," he said outside the court. "I was a mile away from where it happened and I was arrested four hours after it happened, but I was repeatedly beaten, spat on and urinated on, and I had a dog in front of my face when I was handcuffed."
