LONDON, June 15 (UPI) -- Andre Agassi of the United States became the latest star to withdraw from Wimbldon Tuesday, pulling out because of a hip injury.
Agassi, 34, who won at Wimbledon in 1992, joined joined French Open winner Gaston Gaudio, Gustavo Kuerten, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters among players forced out because of injuries.
"I have been struggling with a hip injury for the past couple of months and in my preparation for Wimbledon realized the injury was only worsened by the nature of the surface (grass) and would prevent me from competing," Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam winner, said in a statement to tournament officials.
"My hope and plans are to see you next year."
Agassi lost his opening match in his last three tournaments.
