Cincinnati names Peters men's hoops coach

CINCINNATI, June 14 (UPI) -- Two days after suspending Bob Huggins for being charged with drunken driving, Cincinnati Monday named Dan Peters interim men's basketball coach.

Huggins was given a mandatory suspension Saturday after he was stopped Tuesday night in Fairfax, Ohio for driving under the influence. He was arrested after failing a sobriety test.

Peters has been on the staff for the past five seasons, serving as associate coach for the last two years. His 27-season coaching career includes 14 seasons as a head coach with a 237-140 record.

"Effective immediately, this is Dan Peters' basketball team," Cincinnati Director of Athletics Bob Goin said. "He will have total authority with no outside interference to run the basketball program. He will report directly to me regarding the operation of the staff and continue to move the program forward."

Peters, 49, took over the team during the preseason of the 2002-03 campaign when Huggins was recovering from a massive heart attack.
