SAN JOSE, Calif., June 13 (UPI) -- Brian Ching and Brian Mullan scored second-half goals to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 3-1 victory Saturday night over the MetroStars.
In the 79th minute, Richard Mulrooney lofted a ball into the box, where Ching settled it, cut past goalkeeper Zach Wells and shot into the top right corner of the net to snap a 1-1 tie. Mullan sealed the win with a minute remaining on a great solo effort.
After bringing down a long ball on the left flank, he charged into the box, lost his footing and tumbled to the turf. Mullan got back on his feet, split two defenders and fired a shot through defender Kenny Arena's legs for his second goal of the season. A month after the teams battled to a wild 5-5 tie, defender Jeff Agoos scored on a 25-yard free kick in the first half to put San Jose in front.
The Metros equalized in the 59th minute. Off a foul by Mulrooney, Mark Lisi struck a free kick from the top of the box that was stopped by goalkeeper Jon Conway. The ball caromed off Agoos and the crossbar before rookie defender Jeff Parke scored on a diving header.
