R. Schumacher on pole for F1 Canadian GP

MONTREAL, June 12 (UPI) -- Ralf Schumacher edged Jenson Button by less than 7-100ths of a second Saturday to take the pole position for Sunday's Formula One Canadian Grand Prix.

Schumacher recorded a time of 1 minute, 12.275 seconds around the 2.75-mile track in his Williams-BMW. Thw German has not finished better than sixth in six races since a fourth-place effort in the first race of the year. This is only his second front row start of 2004.

The last driver out during the one-hour session, Schumacher was down to Button in the first two sectors, but found extra speed in the closing moments and shaved 0.066 of a second off the Englishman's time.

The Renaults of Italy's Jarno Trulli and Spain's Fernando Alonso will start third and fifth, respectively, sandwiching the second Williams-BMW of Juan Montoya of Colombia and pushing series leader Michael Schumacher down to sixth.
