LONDON, June 11 (UPI) -- Martina Navratilova, 47, who first played at Wimbledon 31 years ago and won nine singles titles, will compete in singles this year as a wild card entry.
Navratilova was one of eight women given wild card status by Wimbledon officials Friday.
When Navratilova takes the court after the tournament starts June 21, it will be her first singles appearance at Wimbledon since she lost the final in 1994 to Conchita Martinez.
Navratilova played as a wild card in the recent French Open, losing in the first round. She made it to the semifinals in doubles with partner Lisa Raymond.
Last year, Navratilova and Leander Paes won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title. It was Navratilova's 20th Wimbledon title overall.
