Al Coates named Ducks general manager

ANAHEIM, Calif., June 8 (UPI) -- Al Coates was named interim general manager of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, replacing Bryan Murray who will leave to become the new head coach in Ottawa.

Coates has been a vice president of business side of the Ducks since last year, which indicates that head coach Mike Babcock and other current members of the Anaheim hockey staff would remain. Coates was general manager in Calgary from 1995 until 2000.

Murray led the Ducks to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003 and will take over in Ottawa where frustration over the consistent inability to advance to the Cup Finals led to Jacques Martin's dismissal as coach after more than eight years.

The Los Angeles Times said Tuesday Murray, an Ottawa native, accepted the Senators offer in part due to his frustration over pressures to cut payroll in Anaheim.
