NEW YORK, June 7 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres Monday chose high school shortstop-pitcher Matt Bush with the No. 1 overall pick in the baseball draft.
Bush played at San Diego's Mission Bay High School, where he batted .450 and hit 11 home runs in his senior season. He also pitched, compiling a 9-1 record.
"We are excited about Matt Bush," said Bill Gayton, the Padres' director of scouting. "He's a player we've watched for several years and we project him to perform at a high level once he reaches the majors."
The Detroit Tigers chose right-hand pither Justin Verlander of Old Dominion University, as the second overall pick.
"In a draft heavy on pitching, we are excited to add a pitcher the caliber of Justin to the Tigers organization," said Greg Smith, Tigers director of scouting.
The New York Mets then picked Philip Humber, another right-hander, from Rice.
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays chose another Rice pitcher, Jeffrey Niemannn, with the fourth pick. The Milwaukee Brewers, with pick No. 5, selected right-hand pitcher Mark Rogers from Mount Arafat High School in Maine.
