HALLE, Germany, June 7 (UPI) -- Playing for the first time in more than a month, American Mardy Fish cruised into the second round of the $973,599 Gerry Weber Open.
Fish beat former champion David Prinosil of Germany, 6-4, 6-2, in his first match since mid-April at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston. He missed last month's French Open with a hip injury.
Third seed Jiri Novak beat Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, 6-2, 6-2. Novak, who resides in a small village near Halle, is coming off a second-round loss to eventual champion Gaston Gaudio at the French Open.
Two seeds fell Monday. Two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist Alexander Popp of Germany rallied past No. 7 Andrei Pavel of Romania, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, and German wild card Tommy Haas downed eighth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 6-4.
