SEOUL, June 3 (UPI) -- Kim Un-Yong, South Korean vice president of the International Olympic Committee, was sentenced Thursday to two and a half years in prison on corruption charges.
The Seoul District Court also fined Kim, 73, 788 million won ($679,000) for embezzlement, bribery and illegal use of foreign currency.
Kim, a former lawmaker who served as chief of the World Taekwondo Federation and South Korea's Taekwondo Association, was found guilty of diverting 3.3 billion won from South Korean sports organizations, court officials said.
He was also convicted of receiving 788 million won in bribes from businessmen in exchange for helping them win membership in the South Korean Olympic Committee that he chaired.
Kim has resigned from the leadership of the WTF and stepped down as a national legislator. The IOC has suspended Kim from his post as vice president and is conducting its own investigation into his activities.
