Russell, Gildon, Testaverde released

NEW YORK, June 3 (UPI) -- A number of marquee names were added to the NFL waiver list Wednesday, as expected.

Defensive tackle Darryl Russell of Denver, linebackers Jeremiah Trotter of Washington and Jason Gildon of Pittsburgh and quarterback Vinny Testaverde of the New York Jets were among the high-priced veterans released for salary-cap purposes.

The second wave of NFL free agency starts each year in June, when teams are allowed to spread salary cap penalties that include prorated portions of signing bonuses over two years.

By waiting until June to release Testaverde, the Jets will spread his salary cap hit over two seasons. He will count $3.5 million in 2004 and $4 million in 2005. If he had

stayed with the Jets, the cap charge for 2004 would have been $4.5 million.
