Howell takes 1st-round lead in Wales Open

NEWPORT, Wales, June 3 (UPI) -- David Howell of England led the Wales Open by a stroke Thursday after shooting a 7-under-par 65 in the first round.

Marcel Siem of Germany and Emanuele Canonica of Italy were at 66. Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Steven O'Hara and France's Christian Cevaer were another stroke back.

"I'm delighted to get off to a fast start and feel I am right in there for the

tournament," Howell said.

The European Tour event is played at the Wentwood Hills course.
