Watson, Irwin lead PGA Seniors

LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 27 (UPI) -- Legends Hale Irwin and Tom Watson shot 4-under 67s and were tied for the lead Friday when darkness halted play at the 65th Senior PGA Championship.

Irwin and Watson, who have combined to win this event four times, had a one-shot lead over Gil Morgan.

Morgan had completed 15 holes when play was stopped. Eight players, including Jay Sigel, Jay Haas, Craig Stadler and last week's winner D.A. Weibring, were two strokes off the lead.

Nearly two inches of rain fell overnight and the start of play was delayed two hours. There were 72 players still on the course when the action was halted.

Irwin, who this event from 1996-98, bogeyed the first hole and played error free afterwards with five birdies.

"I'm delighted to be in the position I am," Irwin said. "I did not start particularly well but I did have a very, very solid back nine."

Haas is making his Champions Tour debut. He won nine times on the PGA Tour before turning 50 in December.
