Federer, Serena, Venus win; Ferrero falls

PARIS, May 27 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland and American sisters Serena and Venus Williams won their matches Thursday in the French Open.

Defending men's champion Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain was eliminated.

Federer, the world's top-ranked player won 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) over Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, advancing to the third round.

Ferrero,who has been bothered by rib and wrist injuries, fell to Igor Andreev of Russia 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Andreev is ranked No. 77 in the world.

David Nalbandian of Argentina, Australian Lleyton Hewitt and three-time winner Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil all advanced.

On the women's side, second-seeded Serena Williams beat Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and Venus Williams, the fourth-seed, ousted Jelena Costanic of Croatia 6-3, 6-3.

Other winners included sixth-seeded Anastasia Myskina of Russia, seventh-seeded Jennifer Capriati of the United States and No. 11 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.

Twelfth-seeded Ali Sugiyama of Japan fell to Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and No. 16 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland was eliminated by Shinobu Asagoe of Japan.
