Report: Barnett to keep his job

DENVER, May 26 (UPI) -- Colorado University football coach Gary Barnett will keep his job in the wake of a recruiting scandal at the school, a Denver newspaper reported Wednesday.

University of Colorado President Betsy Hoffman may make the announcement Thursday, according to sources quoted by the Rocky Mountain News.

There will be no changes in the leadership of the Colorado athletic department although it will be placed under stricter oversight by the university, the News reported.

A university spokeswoman had no comment on the report.

An independent commission recommended last week the athletic director report directly to the university provost rather than the chancellor because he could provide more "attentive supervision."

Barnett was put on leave in February after making what Hoffman called "insensitive" remarks about former Buffaloes kicker Katie Hnida, who alleged in a Sports Illustrated column she was raped by a CU teammate four years ago.

Nine women have alleged they were sexually assaulted since 1997 by CU football players or recruits.
