NEW YORK, May 23 (UPI) -- Tom Glavine flirted with the first no-hitter in the New York Mets' 43-year history Sunday before his first career one-hitter in a 4-0 win over Colorado.
Glavine (6-2) retired the first 18 batters before Denny Hocking walked to lead off the seventh. The no-hit bid ended when Kit Pellow doubled with two outs in the eighth. Hocking and Pellow were Colorado's only baserunners.
It was the longest the Mets had a no-hitter going since David Cone went 7 2/3 innings in June 1988 against Philadelphia. Glavine pitched 7 2/3 hitless innings on Aug. 12, 1989 against San Diego while with Atlanta.
The 38-year-old lefthander, who had six two-hitters in his career, struck out eight in his first complete game since May 27, 2002 while with the Braves.
Kaz Matsui led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run off Shawn Estes (6-3).
