The Italian, whose previous best qualifying position was second, will line up alongside BAR's Jenson Button on the front row.

Button, who took his first pole at Imola last month, was 0.411 seconds slower than Trulli.

Schumacher, in a Ferrari, faces a task to maintain his perfect record this season after qualifying fourth.

Sunday, the six-time world champion from Germany will try to set a F1 record for wins to start the season and tie the mark for longest winning streak in a season.

Schumacher starts alongside Fernando Alonso on the second row after the Spaniard took third.
