WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, May 21 (UPI) -- D.A. Weibring charged to the lead Friday at the Allianz Championship, matching his best round of the season with a 6-under-par 65.
Wiebring built a two-stroke lead on the first day of the 54-hole event, totaling six birdies on a bogey-free day. It was his best round since he posted a 6-under 65 in the second round of the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in February.
A five-time champion on the PGA Tour, Weibring won once as a rookie on the elder circuit, despite not qualifying for the tour until June. He overcame flu-like symptoms to rally from five strokes off the pace and claim the SAS Championship.
Weibring will take a two-stroke lead over Tom Wargo into the second round. Tom Kite, Bobby Walzel and rookie Keith Fergus were three shots back.
