BALTIMORE, May 21 (UPI) -- Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Anthony Wright will undergo shoulder surgery and may need more than a month to recover. General Manager Ozzie Newsome said.
The right-handed throwing Wright has been in pain for months with a labrum (cartilage) tear in his right shoulder, team officials said.
"It could be a four-to-six week injury. It could be longer," Newsome said Thursday.
The Washington Post reported it is believed the injury occurred when Wright led the Ravens' from a 17-point deficit to a 44-41 victory over the Seattle Seahawks Nov. 23.
He took over as the Ravens' starter after rookie Kyle Boller was injured in the 10th game of the season, finished the rest of the year and led the team to its first AFC North title. Wright was expected to resume his backup role this season.
"It's very clear cut: Kyle Boller is the starter, period," Coach Brian Billick told the Baltimore Sun. "No one is going to come in and compete."
