Another assistant coach leaves Cavaliers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 18 (UPI) -- Scott Shepherd has become the second basketball assistant coach to resign at Virginia since the season ended.

Shepherd, an assistant to Coach Pete Gillen for five years, left the team Tuesday, joining Rod Jensen, who departed in April.

The latest move continues an off-season of turmoil for Gillen's program.

It had been speculated that Gillen would be fired after his team failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season, but he was retained after a lengthy review by Athletic Director Craig Littlepage.

Forward Derrick Byars decided in April to transfer. He became the 13th player to leave the program with eligibility remaining during Gillen's six-year tenure, according to the Charlottesville Daily Progress.

Gillen wanted to hire former Clemson Coach Larry Shyatt to replace Jensen, but last week Shyatt decided to join the staff of Florida Coach Billy Donovan.
