Tarver stuns Roy Jones

LAS VEGAS, May 16 (UPI) -- Antonio Tarver scored a stunning second-round knockout of Roy Jones Jr. in Las Vegas Saturday night to capture the WBC light heavyweight title.

Tarver landed a sweeping left to the side of Jones' face. Jones was knocked under the ropes in Tarver's corner before managing to get to one knee at the count of seven. After getting to his feet, Jones wobbled across the ring and referee Jay Nady waved an end to the fight at 1:41.

The loss at the Mandalay Bay Events Center marked just the second for Jones, whose only other defeat came when he was disqualified against Montell Griffin in 1997. He later avenged that defeat.

Tarver's record is now 22-2. Jones is 49-2.

Six months ago, Tarver dropped what he felt was a majority decision to the seemingly unbeatable Jones, and had been itching to get another shot at the man considered one of the greatest fighters of his era.
