Report: NASCAR to make schedule change

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 13 (UPI) -- NASCAR races currently held in Rockingham and Darlington will be moved next year to Phoenix and Fort Worth, the Charlotte Observer reported Thursday.

The possible moves have been the subject of various reports since a lawsuit filed against NASCAR was settled out of court last month.

The 2005 Nextel Cup schedule is expected to be released Friday.

Rockingham stages two Nextel Cup races a year, the second of which would be moved to Arizona. It would be held in late February or March, giving NASCAR three West Coast races early in the season.

The report added that Darlington's November date would end up at Texas Motor Speedway as part of a settlement stemming from the lawsuit filed against NASCAR by Francis Ferko, a stockholder for Speedway Motorsports Inc., which runs the Texas track.

The Southern 500 in Darlington would move from November to a possible Mother's Day weekend, maybe Saturday night.

International Speedway Corp. owns the North Carolina Speedway and Phoenix International Speedway.
