Harden (1-2) surrendered run-scoring singles to Enrique Wilson and Derek Jeter around a two-run triple by Kenny Lofton in the second inning as New York built a 4-0 lead.

The 22-year-old right-hander stifled the Yankees thereafter, retiring 19 of the next 21 batters. He lasted a season-high 7 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and six hits.

Mark Kotsay finished off a three-run second with a two-run single, breaking out of a 12-for-66 slump with three hits and matching a career best with four RBI.

The win came after the Yankees went 5-0 against Oakland's vaunted trio of Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito.
