Kim Williams leads LPGA tourney

WILLIAMSBURG, Va., May 7 (UPI) -- Kim Williams, whose career has been marred by a bullet and car wreck, built a four-stroke lead Friday at the Michelob ULTRA Open.

Williams had an eagle and six birdies on a bogey-free day at the Kingsmill Resort and Spa, carding a career-best 8-under-par 63 to reach 11-under 131 midway through an event featuring all of the big names on the LPGA Tour.

The only times Williams has had her name in the news over the past decade has been by accident. She was struck in the neck by a stray bullet while entering a drug store in 1994 and broke her collarbone and sternum three years ago in head-on collision.

Williams' best finish during a 17-year LPGA Tour career has been a runner-up showing in 1988.

Her closest challengers through two rounds were Christina Kim and Korean Soo-Yun Kang, neither of whom has won on the LPGA Tour.

Superstar Annika Sorenstam settled for a second-round 71 that left her in a tie for 23rd at 2-under 140.
