WARWICKSHIRE, England, May 6 (UPI) -- David Howell of England shot a 6-under-par-66 Thursday for a one-shot first-round lead over five players in the British Masters.
Right behind Howell were Michael Campbell of New Zealand, Trevor Immelman of South Africa, Eduardo Romero of Argentina, Scotland's Andrew Coltart and England's Kenneth Ferrie.
Howell has been bothered by back and shoulder injuries and didn't play for six weeks until last week's Italian Open.
"The muscles are a little tight, but it's great," he said. "I'm blissfully unaware of it now. It would be a massive
tournament to win, but one day at a time. The difficult thing is playing that well four days in a row."
Other scores included a 70 by Darren Clarke, 71 by Lee Westwood and 72s by defending champion Greg Owen, Retief Goosen and Jose Maria Olazabal.
