Cubs' Gonzalez sidelined up to six weeks

CHICAGO, May 6 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs shortstop Alex Gonzalez may be sidelined six weeks with a broken bone in his right wrist, the team reported Thursday.

Gonzalez was hit by a pitched ball as he swung in the seventh inning of a 2-0 loss to Arizona Wednesday. The umpire ruled it was a foul ball and Gonzalez then struck out, but he had to be removed from the game later because of the injury.

"The umpires said he wasn't hit in the first place," Cubs Manager Dusty Baker said. "Nobody could tell except Alex."

An MRI Thursday showed that Gonzalez suffered a fracture of "the ulna styloid in his wrist" and would have to wear a cast for at least three weeks. Team officials said it was expected the shortstop would be out "about six weeks."

Ramon Martinez replaced Gonzalez at shorstop, at least temporarily.

Gonzalez is hitting .244 with three home runs and seven runs batted in.

Other Cubs sidelined include second baseman Mark Grudzielanek and pitchers Mark Prior and Mike Remlinger. Grudzielanek and Prior have Achilles tendon injuries. Remlinger had shoulder surgery last fall and is expected back soon.
