Red Wings captain recovers at home

DETROIT, May 3 (UPI) -- Detroit Red Wings Captain Steve Yzerman may be out of professional hockey for good, the Detroit Free Press said Monday.

Late Saturday surgeons worked on Yzerman's left eye for four-and-a-half hours after an errant puck smashed the socket and scratched the cornea.

Detroit lost Saturday's game against the Calgary Flames 1-0 to go 3-2 in the Western conference semi-finals. If eliminated in Monday night's game, Saturday's game could turn out to have been the final one for the 39-year-old Yzerman.

He is recovering from the surgery at home and, reportedly, asked for permission to travel with his teammates to Calgary on Monday.

Permission was denied and he will follow the rest of the series from his home with his family, the Free Press said.
