Red Wings captain Yzerman hit in face

May 1, 2004 at 5:09 PM

DETROIT, May 1 (UPI) -- Steve Yzerman, captain of the Detroit Red Wings, was forced to the locker room Saturday after being struck in the face with a deflected shot.

Yzerman was skating toward the net from the left corner when teammate Mathieu Schneider unleashed a hard slap shot from the point. The puck redirected off the stick of Calgary Flames defenseman Rhett Warrener and nailed Yzerman.

Yzerman, who turns 39 next week, immediately fell to the ice, writhing in pain. He went to the locker room with 8:03 left in the second period of a scoreless game.
