SAN JOSE, Calif., May 1 (UPI) -- Freddy Adu made his first professional start for D.C. United, which rallied for a 1-1 tie with San Jose.
A 14-year-old phenom, Adu came off the bench in his first four MLS games but got the start in this one. He was errant with one shot before he was replaced by Alecko Eskandarian in the 80th minute.
Dema Kovalenko, making his first start of the season, came through in the 66th minute, getting a cross from Bobby Convey at the far goalpost before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Pat Onstad.
The Earthquakes grabbed the lead in the 33rd minute. Defender Jeff Agoos sent the ball into the box and Troy Dayak put a header by goalkeeper Nick Rimando for his first goal since May 5, 2001.
The tie kept United winless at San Jose since June 3, 1998.
