CINCINNATI, April 30 (UPI) -- A lawyer for the colorful former owner of the Cincinnati Reds says most of her estimated $100 million estate will go to charity.
Bob Martin, long-time lawyer for Marge Schott, said except for several millions bequeathed to relatives and friends, the estate will go to the Marge & Charles J. Schott Foundation, established by Schott and her late husband, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Friday.
Schott, who died March 2 at the age of 75, held the controlling shares of the Reds from 1984 to 1999, a period highlighted by the team's World Series title in 1990.
In 1999, Major League Baseball forced Schott to sell her controlling stake in the team because of controversial statements she had made.
Locally, though, she was best known for her generosity, including a $1.5 million gift to St. Ursula Academy in East Walnut Hills, a $1 million gift to the Dan Beard Boy Scouts Council and a large donation that enabled the local zoo to open a $6 million exhibit on vanishing species.
