DALLAS, April 30 (UPI) -- The Dallas Cowboys have announced plans to build their new taxpayer-supported $650 million stadium at the site of the Cotton Bowl near downtown Dallas.
Dallas County Judge Margaret Keliher said Cowboys officials advised county officials late Thursday that the site had been selected over another Dallas location and the Las Colinas area of Irving. The plan is expected to require taxpayer support, which means there are major political hurdles.
"We are committed to getting something done, to have a new stadium in this area," Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones told The Dallas Morning News.
Details of the financing package were not immediately released but in the past the Cowboys said they wanted about $400 million to be financed by taxpayers, possibly through an increase in hotel and rental car taxes. A county election would be required later this year or next.
If the Cowboys returned to the Cotton Bowl it would be historic because that's where the franchise was born. The Cowboys are anxious to get out of aging Texas Stadium in Irving, but officials in the suburban city think they can convince the team to build a new facility there.
