Irwin shoots for 40th Champions win

HOOVER, Ala., April 29 (UPI) -- Hale Irwin will be trying for his 40th Champions Tour victory and Tom Jenkins will defend his title in the Bruno's Memorial Classic in Alabama.

The tournament begins Friday on the par-72, 6,627-yard Greystone Golf & Country Club course. First prize is $225,000.

Irwin, who captured the Bruno's title in 2001, won the Legends of Golf last week for his first victory this year. He is the all-time leader in wins on the Champions Tour.

Jenkins, winner of the Blue Angels Classic two weeks ago, won the Bruno's event last year by three strokes over Bruce Fleischer. Jenkins has five wins on the tour.

Other contenders this week include Gil Morgan, Craig Stadler, Tom Watson, Tom Purtzer and Fleischer.

Watson, last year's tour Player of the Year, will be competing in his first event since February.

Also entered is Hubert Green, who continues a comback from cancer treatment. Green is one of the designers of the Greystone course.

Morgan is the leading money winner this year, followed by Purtzer, Stadler and Irwin. Jenkins is ninth on the money list.
