MILAN, Italy, April 29 (UPI) -- Gregory Havret of France and England's Mark Roe shared the first-round lead in the Italian Open Thursday with 8-under-par 64s.
New Zealand's Michael Campbell and Christopher Hanell of Sweden were tied for third at 65 and four players were at 66.
Havret won the tournament in 2001.
"After I won in Italy, I struggled for a year or so but put in a lot of good work over the winter, especially on the putting," Havret said.
Roe said he used an old long-handled putter he had put away in his garage years ago.
"When I pulled this out, as soon as I got it in my hands it was like an old friend," Roe said. "It just swung differently, the balance was better and it stayed on line better when I made my stroke. I thought why did I ever get rid of it in the first place."
