Top-seed Schuettler advances at Munich

MUNICH, Germany, April 27 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Rainer Schuettler of Germany, Olivier Rochus, Jiri Novak and Vincent Spadea were among first-round winners Tuesday in Germany's BMW Open.

Schuettler, who lost in the finals of the Monte Carlo Masters to Guillermo Coria Sunday, defeated Robin Soderling of Sweden 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Rochus, of Belgium, advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the tournament's second seed, Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand. Srichapan also was knocked out in the first round at Monte Carlo.

The third-seeded Novak, of the Czech Republic, beat Russia's Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-2 and No. 5 Spadea, of the United States, eliminated Dieter Kindlmann of Germany 6-4, 6-2.

Other winners included Tommy Haas, Alexander Waske, Boris Pashanski, Michel Kratochvil and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
