LSU's Gunter retires; succeeded by Chatman

BATON ROUGE, La., April 27 (UPI) -- Hall of Fame Coach Sue Gunter of Louisiana State announced her retirement Tuesday, ending a 40-year career that produced more than 700 victories.

Gunter, 62, had been on medical leave since Feb. 19. She was replaced by Pokey Chatman, who was an all-America player under Gunter and then worked as her assistant for 13 years.

Chatman had been interim coach since Gunter went on leave. The Lady Tigers this year advanced to their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament Final Four, where they lost to Tennessee.

"It's sweet," Chatman said after her promotion. "It's even sweeter that I can follow in her shoes."

Gunter coached at LSU 22 years, compiling a record of 442-221 and leading the team to 14 NCAA Tournaments. She previously coached at Middle Tennessee and Stephen F. Austin.

Overall, Gunter's record is 708-308. Only Jody Conradt of Texas and Patt Summitt of Tennessee have won more games as coaches in the women's college ranks.
