Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

MUNICH, Germany, April 26 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands was among first-round winners Monday in the BMW Open in Germany.
Verkerk, runner-up in the French Open last year, defeated Joachim Johansson of Sweden 6-4, 6-2.
In other matches involving seeded players, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia eliminated sixth-seeded Andrei Pavel of Romania 7-6 (7-3), 6-4; Taylor Dent of the United States, seeded No. 7, beat Antony Dupuis of France 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2), and Armenian Sargis Sargsian ousted eighth-seeded American James Blake 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
Also, Romanian Victor Hanescu defeated Lars Burgsmuller of Germany 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and Radek Stepanek" class="tpstyle">Czech Radek Stepanek beat Slovakian Karol Kucera, 6-4, 7-5.
