Gaudio, Martin advance at Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain, April 26 (UPI) -- Former champions Gaston Gaudio of Argentina and Todd Martin of the United States won first-round matches in Spain's Open Seat Godo Monday.

The 13th-seeded Gaudio, who won the claycourt tournament in 2002, defeated Dutchman Raemon Sluiter 6-3, 6-3. Martin, the winner in 1998, beat Spaniard David Ferrer 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-4.

Another former champion, Spain's Albert Costa, the 14th seed, was ousted by countryman Albert Montanes, a wildcard entry.

Nicolas Almagro, a Spanish 18-year-old, eliminated Alex Corretja 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in another first-round match.

In other matches, Mario Ancic of Croatia beat No. 12 Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 and Swedish wild card Thomas Johansson topped Spaniard Didac Perez 7-5, 6-3.
