NEW YORK, April 24 (UPI) -- The San Diego Chargers opened the 2004 NFL draft on Saturday by selecting Misisippi quarterback Eli Manning with the top pick.
About an hour later, the Chargers shipped Manning to the New York Giants. The Giants had taken North Carolina State quarterback Philip Rivers with the fourth pick and then traded his rights to the Chargers along with a third-round pick in this draft and first and fifth-round picks in 2005.
Manning's trade was one of 10 completed in the course of a wild first round. The University of Miami had a record six first-round selections to raise their total to 19 over the last four years.
The Chargers concluded what had become a staredown with Manning, whose father, former NFL quarterback Archie Manning, told the team this week not to select his son.
Giants quarterback Kerry Collins has one year left on his contract at $7 million.
Manning set or tied 47 single-game season or career school records -- more than half of which belonged to Archie. His brother, Indianapolis quarterback Peyton, is a perennial Pro Bowler.
The Oakland Raiders used the second pick on Iowa's Robert Gallery. Arizona took receiver Larry Fitzgerald of Pittsburgh with the third pick.
