NEW YORK, April 23 (UPI) -- The National Football League Draft begins Saturday with San Diego holding the No. 1 pick and the New York Giants hoping they come up with it.
San Diego must decide whether to select Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning or trade the No. 1 pick to the Giants -- perhaps picking up a star player and a second-round choice.
The Chargers have a recent history of making the wrong decision. Six years ago, they had the second pick and settled for Ryan Leaf, who turned into one of the league's biggest busts.
Three years ago, the Chargers had the No. 1 overall pick and passed on the chance to select Michael Vick, the most exciting quarterback in the NFL. They swapped the choice to Atlanta.
At quarterback, the Chargers have Drew Brees, who is only 4-16 in his last 20 starts and was benched for five games last year.
Quarterbacks have been selected with the No. 1 overall pick five times in the last six years.
